The Biochemist June 2005 issue: the mitochondrial renaissance

The June issue of The Biochemist is bursting with energy, packed with articles that examine the powerhouse of the cell.



Professor Chris Cooper introduces the issue, sketching the history of mitochondrial research. There was a time when you were
laughed at if you thought all diseases were related to mitochondrial dysfunction, but now …


Professor Anthony Schapira of the Royal Free gives a survey of the links between mitochondria and human disease. Professor
Mervyn Singer, from University College London, looks at a dramatic instance: sepsis. A quarter of patients admitted to
British intensive care units have sepsis and it is the main cause of death in the critically ill. Indeed, patients with three
or more organ failures have a greater than 50% chance of dying.


Murder or suicide? That is the choice faced by cells in pathological conditions.Professor Guy Brown from Cambridge explains
how the decision is made and put into execution.



All is not death and disease. Professor Victor Darley-Usmar from Alabama examines at the signalling and redox aspects of the
mitochondrion. It looks as is the mitochondrion still has some surprises in store.
